The Journey Begins
The Sanctum journey began in 1992 on the pristine, unspoilt coastline of Byron Bay, Australia’s most
easterly point. Greg and Jicky Milham moved to the Byron Shire in 1989 in search of a cleaner, more
peaceful and natural lifestyle in which to raise a family. It was here that Greg and Jicky soon found the
inspiration to start researching, developing and creating naturally derived skin and health care products.
Having witnessed first hand the ‘chemical’ side of the industry while running a manufacture and fill business
in Sydney, Greg was determined to produce a range of products that; remained true to their promise of
‘natural’, carried meaningful levels of active ingredients, and most importantly, delivered on their promise.
 
Greg furthered his studies in natural ingredient, products chemistry with a vision to encapsulate the pure,
tranquillity of his surrounds combining ingredients with therapeutic levels of active vitamins, herbal extracts
and essential oils, grown locally and from around the globe choosing wherever possible to support
FAIRTRADE producers in underdeveloped communities overseas. The result is a range of skin, body and
hair care treatments that take the efficacy of ‘all natural’ preparations to an exciting new level.
The original site where Greg and Jicky started is still home to Sanctum, housing the head office,
warehousing and manufacturing facility, laboratories as well as the famous Sanctum factory retail outlet
which attracts thousands of local and international visitors each year as they travel along Australia’s
spectacular east coast.
Sanctum remains a family owned and run business. Greg takes on the role of chief formulations chemist
and draws on his ‘trusted mates’ in the Byron Shire as a source for raw, natural ingredients. Jicky is involved
in the running of the day to day business handling administration, sales, training
and customer service.
Their daughter, Katrina, takes time out from her university studies to help with sales  and traning.
Their two young sons, Daniel and Jason, work in the factory on weekends and school holidays, their handy
work being responsible for some of the luxurious hand made soaps, washes and scrubs in the Sanctum
range.
Sanctum is the worldwide amenity supplier to the Rydges Hotel and Resort Chain (25, 4 and 5 star hotels/
resorts). From humble beginnings in local health food stores, Sanctum is now exported to Asia and Europe.
Now Sanctum has taken the next step by moving from Natural to Certified Organic so as to further
differentiates our products from the rest. Every Sanctum product contains more than 70% Certified Organic
Ingredients and many products are more than 95% Certified Organic. Today Greg and Jicky are excited to
see their years of hard work and dedication come together as they take “a little piece of Byron” and share
it with the world via the Sanctum range.

The Organic Difference
The following is an extract from the Code of Practice by our certifying body O.F.C. (Organic
Food Chain) which all Sanctum products must abide by.
Prohibited:
1. Petrochemicals and other synthetic substances as ingredients in their own right.
2. Non organic products of animal origins.
3. Talc.
4. Fragrances and other colour components of non-organic or synthetic origin.
5. Anti-microbial agents not produced from organic sources.
6. Chelating agents based on EDTA and its salts.
7. Fatty Chain source material of petrochemical origin.
8. Sulphonation, ethoxylation and propoxylation.
9. Alkyl Sulphates (eg Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Sodium Coco Sulphate, Ammonium Lauryl
    Sulphate)
10. Alkyl Ether Sulphates (eg Sodium Laureth Sulphate, Ammonium Laureth Sulphate)
11. Polysorbates (eg Polysorbate 20)
12. Ethanolamides (eg Cocamide DEA, Cocamide MEA)
13. Chemically synthesised sunscreens.
